+++ Music for Hammering:

01 - The Golden Throne
This track evokes the duality of Warmaster Horus and the Emperor and the monstrosities (Chaos Space Marines and Golden Throne) created from their ultimate conflict. It is a conflict that will split the universe in two, define its future for Millennia, and set the tone for this CD.
02 - Gene-Seed
Gene-Seed attempts to capture the fear, madness and ancientness of the implantation ritual, and the resulting "hopeful monsters" that may or may not survive the ordeal. It has a rather annoying, nerve-racking pace which I thought captured the creepy feeling I get when I read of gene-seed rites, harvests, etc.
03 - The Rust of Mars
In Barrington Bayley's book Eye of Terror, he writes of Mars: "...thick weather-worn windows gave a panoramic view for hundreds of miles over the landscape of what was still called the Red Planet. In the main, its reddish hue was not due, as in ages past, to its ochre deserts. It was due to rust. What lay below the tower resembled nothing so much as a riotous, decaying jungle, spreading and spreading without end. But the jungle was not natural. It consisted of gigantic machinery, both new and abandoned, of hive cities, both new and abandoned, of colossal engineered constructions, some of it twisted and sagging and covered with an oily fog of pollution. It was, in fact, the result of nearly 40 centuries of the Cult Mechanicus, the worship of the machine." This song is dedicated to the Red Planet of the 41st Century.
04 - The Great Betrayer
The violins that are heard on several tracks here thread their way through a minefield of slashing beats, warning beacons and nearly imperceptible daemonic utterings. Horus, once a hero of the Imperium, has transformed himself into the ultimate abomination of man, the great betrayer.
05 - Lilith's Desire
The Lilith in the title refers to Inquisitor Lilith from Dan Abnett's Ghostmaker novel. The beautiful black-leather-clad Inquisitor makes a pass at Gaunt. There is danger in the air. He rebukes her, while all around, a planetary storm rages, both a physical and a psychic one. Eldar magic, Chaos magic, warp spirits are all converging. The bewitching Lilith has some magical secrets of her own. [Halfway through the piece, you can hear something approximating Gaunt's chainsword firing up -- his definitive answer to Lilith's advances perhaps?]
06 - Tears of Isha/She Who Thirsts
"Tears" is a sad violin and piano-driven lament with a quiet marching snare that builds into a more aggressive attack. Made me think of the Eldar goddess Isha weeping for the loss of her people's souls.
07 - Planet Fall
This title is a double entendre. It refers to planetfall, as in a planetary insertion of troops, and planet fall, as in the resulting fall of the planet to invaders from the stars.
08 - Gargant
With its bottom-heaviness, kettledrum beats and bone-rake rhythms, you can almost see the giant, ancient Ork vehicles lumbering onto the battlefield, their brutish crews snickering with anticipation over the imminent bloodshed.
09 - Another Ghost Gone
Our homage to the amazing Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghost series. It is meant as a simple prelude to track 10, "Casualties of War." It is a slow, steady, celestial march that builds towards a death knell. I pictured the Tanith
1st marching into battle against an Ork horde (which lumbered forward on track 08, "Gargant") -- a snaking column of stoic men, their homeworld a fading memory, trying to gird themselves against the inevitable losses, hearing heavenly choirs in their heads pushing them forward and into oblivion.
10 - Casualties of War
A closing lament, with quiet horns, guitar and more marching drum (hey, it's a wargame soundtrack, gotta have a lot of marching drums!). Quiet, sad, then harshly interrupted by the most awful coughing/gurgling sounds and horror movie strings. You can just see the devastated battlefield, the Apothecaries making their grim, urgent rounds, and the mortally wounded taking their last desperate breaths.
